Big Data - Explained!

The term BIG DATA has been under the limelight since quite a while now. It's definitely the next BIG thing as the name suggests but is also linked with a lot of misconceptions and controversies. In this post, I would try to explain what Big Data is in the simplest way I can.

BIG DATA

Big Data refers to enormous amounts of data which is so huge that it can't be stored or processed by traditional computing or database techniques, which later may even reveal trends, associations or patterns relating to human behavior if processed and analysed using right tools and systems (Sagiroglu and Sinanc, 2013).

CLASSIFICATION OF BIG DATA (Shahzan, 2019)

STRUCTURED DATA - Data that has a proper structure associated with it.
Eg.: Excel sheets, CSV files, etc

SEMI STRUCTURED DATA - Data that doesn't have a proper structure but contains semantic tags.
Eg.; Data present within emails, log files, etc

UNSTRUCTURED DATA - Data with no structure at all.
Eg. : Image files, Audio files, Video files, etc

CHARACTERISTICS OF BIG DATA (GeeksforGeeks, 2019)

VOLUME refers to the AMOUNT of data being generated.
VELOCITY refers to the SPEED at which it is being generated.
VARIETY refers to the different TYPES of data getting generated.
VARESITY refers to BIASES or UNCERTAINTY of data generated.
VALUE refers to the ABILITY TO TRANSFORM the data into business.

I have tried my best to explain the concepts in simplest terms. In regards to the scope of Big Data, in my opinion will be a HUGE thing in the near future because of its amalgamation with technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, IoT, blockchain, etc. This might help in analyzing and transforming data which the traditional computers hardly can. I feel, this is just the beginning of a big revolution in data industry.
